3D printing (3DP) or additive manufacturing (AM) or rapid prototyping technologyis gaining importance in various industries including healthcare, engineering, manufacturing, art and education. In healthcare industry, 3D printing technology has become popular due to its ability to save and improve lives which is cost effective. The 3D printing technology employs equipment to create life whereas 3D bioprinting is a method where human cells and components can be used as 3D printing material. Today, surgeons across the globe can accomplish complex surgeries especially replacement surgeries with the help of CT scan data of bones, blood vessels, or other organs that is converted into a virtual design and later into an object.
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for example has recently found a 3D bioprinting technology, which creates three-dimensional models by using tissue cells. This technology is used to create structures which can function similar to living tissues to replace injured or diseased ones. The wake forest scientists have printed ear, bone and muscle structures by using 3D bioprinting. Bio-degradable, plastic-like materials are used in this technology to form the tissue where outer shape of an organ is formed that protects the cells from damage. The tissue allows nutrients and oxygen from the body to diffuse into the structures which promotes cell growth. Other benefits, which can be derived from 3D bioprinting, include developing high-throughput 3D-bioprinted tissue models for drug discovery and toxicology.
