Bio-Based Coating Additives: A Sustainable Approach to Modern Coating Technology.

Published By: IndustryARC Published On : 19-May-2016

Coating additives fit to a wide and diffuse class of major components used in a coating formulation. The characteristics of different additives vary and provide a range of properties to a coating. Wetting and dispersing additives, for instance, enhance uniformity of pigment distribution while rheology additives improve the flow behavior of the coating formulation and so on. Wood is the world’s most vital natural material for building, construction and living. Wooden floorings, furniture and domestic articles are highly popular. Some of the common features provided by wood are high versatility and stability along with excellent workability. The demand for wood coating is extensively increasing owing to the Favourable housing market fueled by low interest rates as well the trend towards larger, more expensive homes, and an advancement in landowners for enhancing and redecorating their dwellings, inside and out. The main challenges involved in the development of wood coatings are poor substrate wetting, presence of air bubbles, insufficient leveling and pigment settling.

However, various products used for wood coatings around the home have volatile organic solvents and other toxic chemicals that have been linked to poor indoor air quality and possible health impacts.  There are many vital reasons that influence the emission rate such as VOC content of coatings as applied, VOC density, area of wood coated, solids content of coatings as applied, thickness of the applied coating and number of coats applied. Due to the evaporation of organic solvents contained in coating, the VOC compounds are emitted. The emission of VOCs can be influential in producing smog formation and other detrimental effects and is regulated for by the EU and other individual national authorities.

Presently, many manufacturers of wood coatings do offer coating solutions which are healthy and environmentally sound. They are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and formulated without aromatic solvents, heavy metals, or cancer causing chemicals. Recently, an innovative biopolymer based additive for matting is introduced. The product is 100% based on renewable resources and is totally biodegradable. The major benefits of this coating is that they provide excellent matting effect, especially in UV systems, in association with high transparency and a smooth feel without influence on slip. Additionally, the additive improves scratch-, abrasion and blocking resistance. It can be used in solvent-free, solvent- and waterborne systems without detrimental influence on viscosity.
