Acrylic paints exhibit
a very useful property of being fast drying paints. Acrylic means that the pigment for the paint is actually suspended in an acrylic polymer emulsion. These paints are water-based and when dry, they are resistance to water.
Traditional acrylic paints are water-based meaning that water can be used as a thinning agent for these paints without the need for any toxic spirits. Also, washing of the brushes immersed in the traditional acrylic paints is much simpler and can be done with a simple combination of soap and water. Owing to the fast drying property, multiple layers of paint can be applied much fast as compared to other paints such as oil paints. However, the quickly drying paints also tend to dry rapidly on the palette and require the use of special palettes to deal with this. In the case of budding artists, who could be slower, the use of acrylic paints can be slightly problematic. Certain techniques used in painting can make paintings made with acrylic paints resemble those done with oil paints or watercolors. Owing to the versatility offered by acrylic paints, there is a growing demand for them in the market. These paints can be used to paint on surfaces such as paper, board or canvases, offering further options to the artists. Apart from the aforementioned properties, acrylic paints also have the added benefits of being durable and affordable.
One major disadvantage of acrylic paints is the toxicity level. The pigments of Acrylic paints contain toxins. Also, for some applications, the addition of a retarder medium to slow the drying time adds to the toxicity level of acrylic paints.
