A chemical element, with the symbol Sb, antimony is a metalloid that is derived from the naturally occuring sulfide mineral stibnite. Antimony has been used for various applications for several decades. While the older applications included cosmetics, newer applications include batteries, textiles, flame retardants, to name a few. Another important source of antimony is recycled antimony derived from lead acid batteries. Owing to antimony’s relatively high brittleness, it needs to be combined with other metals in order to be suitable for applications requiring higher strengths.

With significant growth of the applications and end user industries where antimony is used, the demand for antimony continues to be on the rise. Increasing purchasing power of the popualtion in some of the emerging economies is also fuelling the growth of the antimony market via the applications they are used in.

A major inhibitor for the global antimony market is the health effects associated with exposure to antimony. Some of the known health hazards include lung cancer, skin irriation, breathing difficulties, among others. Stringent government regulations stem from the aforementioned factor and this also is impacting the overall antimony market.
