Sucrose Ester Market Overview

Sucrose Ester Market size is estimated at $76.1 million in 2021, projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.9% during the forecast period 2022-2027. Sucrose esters are obtained by esterifying sucrose with palm oil from edible fatty acids. This allows them to be used as emulsifiers in almost all food formulations. Sucrose is made to react with fatty acid esters to produce sucrose esters. Lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, and behenic acid are some of the saturated fatty acids used to make sucrose esters. Emulsification, defoaming, dispersion, prevention, retrogradation of starch, and stability are some of the functions of sucrose esters. Sucrose esters are generally manufactured by using interesterification in which the fatty acids used for the synthesis of sucrose esters are themselves in the esterified form. Another method used for the production of sucrose esters is emulsion process which is based on micro-emulsion technology. Sucrose dissolved in propylene glycol alongside a basic catalyst, for instance potassium methoxide. Propylene glycol is extracted by vacuum distillation at temperatures exceeding 120 degrees Celsius followed by filtration to obtain the purified product. Throughout the distillation of propylene glycol, the system remains transparent, indicating the formation of a micro dispersion of sucrose. The yield of the reaction is 96%. Sugar Esters are available with a wide range of Hydrophilic Lipophilic Balance (HLB) values which are determined by the degree of esterification and the kind of fatty acid used. Sucrose esters with a low HLB function as a water-in-oil emulsifier, while sucrose esters with a high HLB act as an oil-in-water emulsifier. The increasing inclination towards convenience food products, increasing demand for personal care products and multifunctional property of sucrose esters are the key drivers for Sucrose Ester market growth.

Sucrose Ester Market Segmentation Analysis: By Form

The Sucrose Ester market based on form can be further segmented into Powder, Liquid and Pellet. Powdered sucrose ester segment accounted for largest market share in 2021 and is poised to grow with the fastest CAGR of 4.2% in the forecast period of 2022-2027 owing to its ability of mixing uniformly at the time of processing. It is widely used in the confectionery segment as it helps to maintain the texture and structure of food products. The global confectionary industry is valued at $217 billion for 2020, and has been growing rapidly. It is used extensively in fruit-flavoured sweets, dessert icing, and baked goods. Sucrose esters in powdered form improves shelf life of baked products by reducing the amount of water available for microbial deterioration. Powdered sucrose esters are also used in dairy-based drinks and other beverages for improving release of taste sensations and texture.

Sucrose Ester Market Segmentation Analysis: By Application

The Sucrose Ester market based on Application can be further segmented into Food: Dairy products, Confectioneries, Bakery products, Beverages, Soups & sauces, Meat products, Cereals and others, Personal care Products: Cosmetics and others, Detergents & cleansers and Pharmaceuticals and Agrochemicals. Based on Application Type, Food segment accounted for largest market share in 2021. The changing preferences, growing disposable income of consumers and western style eating habits boosted the sales for food and beverage industry which in turn augmented the growth of sucrose ester market. Sugar esters are mainly used as preservative and emulsifiers in food and beverage sector. Some of its properties like emulsification, aeration, and protein protection, fuels its application in dairy products. The main advantages of sucrose as a substitute in dairy products are that it prevents protein flocculation and improves flavour release. Sucrose esters have a chemical structure that allows them to interact with dairy proteins. Dairy proteins are less sensitive to high temperatures, low pH, and destabilising components like alcohol and beta-glucan as a result of this interaction. Flocculation can thus be avoided in culinary cream, coffee creamers, and beverages.

The personal care segment is poised to grow with a CAGR of 4.9% in the forecast period of 2022-2027 owing to growing appearance consciousness and rise in disposable incomes. The use of sucrose esters in cosmetics increases skin smoothness and leaves a thin layer on the skin, allowing for optimal moisture retention. Consumers are 40% more willing to personal care products than before the coronavirus pandemic. On average, Americans spend between $244 and $313 on cosmetics every month. The increasing inclination towards personal care product is predicted to augment sucrose ester market growth over the forecast period of 2022-2027.

Sucrose Ester Market Segmentation Analysis: By Geography

The Nut Ingredients market based on Geography can be further segmented into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, South America, and the Rest of the World. Europe accounted for largest market share in 2021 on account of increasing demand for bakery and confectionery products owing to changing lifestyles and diets of people as well as increasing disposable incomes and constant innovation in the Food and Beverage sector by established players in the market. For instance, adoption of Individual Quick Frozen (IQF) Technology which prevents large ice crystals to form in food products. Asia Pacific expected to offer lucrative growth opportunities to the marketers in the projected period of 2022-2027 owing to high awareness regarding cosmetics products and increasing stress on the benefits of personal grooming and beauty on self-esteem and social interaction. China is one of the largest market with a market size of $ 32 billion as for 2020.

Sucrose Ester Market Drivers

Growing Demand of Personal Care Products owing to increase in Geriatric population

According to the report published by Population Reference Bureau, in the U.S. in 2018, the number of people in the age bracket 65 years and above is predicted to rise from 46 million to more than 98 million from 2014 to 2060 and according to United Nation ESCAP over a third of the population is expected to be 60 years or older in Asia Pacific by 2050. These demographic changes are predicted to augment the growth of personal care products which in turn will boost sucrose ester market growth. Skincare, colour cosmetics and haircare products that promote benefits for mature skin and hair with adapted colours continues to fuel the market growth. Increased consumer awareness accompanied with growing use of beauty products to prevent premature signs of ageing by younger and middle-aged generations is expected to augment the market growth in the forecast period.

Increase in demand for bakery, confectionery and dairy products

There’s been increase in demand of bakery and confectionery products on account of growing health consciousness in consumers, increasing disposable income, inclination towards western lifestyle and the prevalence of obesity and chronic diseases owing to hectic lifestyle. It provides twin benefits for bakery products namely: protein interaction and starch interaction. Sucrose esters have a chemical structure that allows them to interact with proteins in flour via hydrophilic and/or hydrophobic interactions. Also being non-ionic, they can easily and effectively compound with amylose, which is found in flour. Over spring, high volume, finer crumb and more tenderness are the results. They also affect sugar crystallisation and sugar crystal stability. Adding sucrose ester to dairy products improves the flavour release, increases overrun, forms fine foam structure, gives creamy mouthfeel and prevents protein flocculation.

Sucrose Ester Market Challenges

Lack of compatibility of reactants

High cost and lack of compatibility of reactants is expected to hinder the market growth over the forecast period. Low reaction rates and conversions are caused by the presence of solid-solid-liquid interfaces among the catalysts (K2 CO3 sucrose and FAMEs). The availability of alternatives such as sorbitan esters and lecithin is predicted to pose threat to the market growth. Moreover, the products which uses sucrose ester have to go through complex and strict approval processes before launching the product in the market. Strict government rules, regulations and interference with the approval process continues to hinder the market growth.
