Cold Formed Steel Framing

Published By: IndustryARC Published On : 23-Nov-2017

Cold formed steel (CFS) are made from structural quality sheet steel that are formed into C-sections and other shapes by roll forming steel through a series of dyes with no application of heat. Steel thickness of various ranges can be achieved to meet variety of non-structural and structural needs. CFS as a construction material possess superior quality over normal structural steel such as resist wrapping, won’t absorb moisture, doesn’t shrink, and fire resistant. Cold formed steel framing is a durable, reliable and cost effective option for low rise and mid-rise building projects. It is a light frame construction where vertical and horizontal structure elements are formed by a system of repetitive framing members. The framing members are typically spaced at 16 or 24 inches on center, with spacing variations lower and higher depending on the loads and coverings. CFS also provides numerous advantage in construction site, as CFS is light making it easy to handle and assemble.

Cold-formed steel framing in North America is typically designed and constructed in relation with standards developed by the American Iron and Steel Institute. Cold-formed steel framing is applicable to architectural layouts where the floor and roof systems are supported on bearing walls. Cold-formed steel framing has been used successfully in building projects greater than 10 stories in height. Cold-formed steel (CFS) framing is light weight, noncombustible, extremely strong and relatively easy to install, it has dominated the market for interior, non-loadbearing partition walls in commercial construction. With advanced technological developments like panelized systems, the construction industry is using CFS for structural applications in mid-rise and multi-housing buildings. CFS framing is rapidly becoming the material of choice for student dormitories, assisted living facilities, and hotels across the countries where maximum outcome is expected with minimal investment. Also CFS framing materials are used to build wall, floor panels, and roof trusses. Cold-formed steel is the preferred material for curtain walls and partitions in commercial construction due to its light weight, high strength, non-combustible nature and ease of installation; hence it is increasingly being used as the primary structural system for buildings up to 9 stories tall.  CFS is manufactured to exacting standards, it is ideally suited for manufacturing into panels and trusses which becomes advantageous for builders that ordering factory-manufactured steel panels and trusses makes them easier to move into steel framing as it minimizes the need for skilled framers, and provides access to experienced design.
