Market Research and Market Trends of Bisphenol Market:
  • The major trend is growing demand for the compound in its two major application areas, viz., epoxy resins and polycarbonates. The future prospects the demand for Bisphenol are likely to be bolstered by the growing utilization of this chemical in rotor blade composites that find application in windmills. Wind energy has been garnering widespread global attention as an eco-friendly option in the energy mix and requires the use of strong and resilient wind turbine rotor blades that are reinforced using epoxy resins.
  • LG Chem Ltd., in May 2017 started commercial operation of a new unit, which utilizes Badger’s proprietary advanced residue recovery technology, in the LG Chem’s existing bisphenol-A (BPA) facilities in Yeosu, Korea.
  • Recently in the month of February 2018, a new European Commission Regulation has lowered the level of Bisphenol A used in certain food-contact materials and introduced a specific migration limit (SML) for BPA in varnishes and coatings. It has revised the SML for BPA in the "Plastics Regulation" 10/2011. This new regulation applies to foodstuff packaging and also indirectly affects packaging materials used for oral and topical medicinal products as these packaging materials require compliance with foodstuff regulation. With respect to the "Plastics Regulation" 10/2011, the new Bisphenol A Regulation reduces the SML for BPA from 0.6 mg/kg to 0.05 mg/kg and expands the ban on the use of BPA in the manufacture of polycarbonate infant feeding bottles to polycarbonate drinking cups or bottles which, due to their spill proof characteristics, are intended for infants and young children.
  • In the month of February 2017, researchers from the Department of Food, Environmental and Nutritional Sciences (DEFENS), University of Milan, Milan, Italy, have researched on a simple hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified glassy carbon electrode for rapid amperometric detection of bisphenol A. The catalytic activity of the modifier toward the oxidation of BPA was demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry. This modifier improved the sensor performances for a rapid and reliable determination of Bisphenol A. Compared to classical methods, this new approach represents an alternative and innovative tool for faster and cheaper evaluation of Bisphenol A migration like plastic bottles to water samples.
